Pope Francis: Young People, Don’t Waste Time On The Internet

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Pope Francis might just be the most popular and well-liked Pope in a long time (maybe ever?), but some recent comments regarding young people and the use of their time may not be received very well by them, especially in today’s technological world. While speaking to a group of around 50,000 German altar servers on Tuesday of this week, the Pope may have stepped on a lot of people’s toes. I guess that’s okay, though, since he’s the Pope – it kind of goes with his job description.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
While speaking to the large group of young people, Pope Francis <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/tech/social-media/pope-francis-urges-young-people-not-waste-time-internet-n173446" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank">encouraged them to be productive with their lives</a>and not to just sit idly by wasting their time. He said, “Maybe many young people waste too many hours on futile things…” He continued, “Our life is made up of time, and time is a gift from God, so it is important that it be used in good and fruitful actions.”</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Just what does he believe to be futile? Well, for starters - “…chatting on the Internet or with smartphones, watching TV soap operas, and (using) the products of technological progress, which should simplify and improve the quality of life, but distract attention away from what is really important.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
While I love technology, Pope Francis might just be onto something here. I rarely see a young person (or any person, really) anywhere who isn’t glued to his or her smartphone. What will their generation look like in the coming decades? It will be interesting to see if any of the younger generation puts his words into practice.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
What do you think? Do you agree with Pope Francis? Do you think we as a society are becoming too dependent on our smartphones and the internet? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!</div>

Is Twitter Moving Into E-Commerce?

<span style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">There has been an interesting turn of events this week in the social media sphere.  Twitter may possibly be planning a move into the e-commerce field.  A number of different users noticed a new, and apparently inactive, setting for “payment and shipping” inside the Twitter Android app.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4wS-3LKDbH5XoLRXHJb0Bjvkjvl7-BKbVyrV3f62i-aoVyIPQ1PoCdOQvvSt4DCrNc39Lg7FX1QKiL1DiMzq9kuAL5JFAK_cc4mYdu9JXhfAtCa6B6OGR3r_GdbFbL6ALMR0RdJCr6lc/s1600/twitter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4wS-3LKDbH5XoLRXHJb0Bjvkjvl7-BKbVyrV3f62i-aoVyIPQ1PoCdOQvvSt4DCrNc39Lg7FX1QKiL1DiMzq9kuAL5JFAK_cc4mYdu9JXhfAtCa6B6OGR3r_GdbFbL6ALMR0RdJCr6lc/s1600/twitter.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
This setting was first highlighted by user <a href="http://twitter.com/am_Bix" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="am_Bix">@am_Bix</a>, who came across the currently unusable option, concealed within the settings menu.  And @am_Bix is not alone in his findings, as at least four other Twitter users have taken screenshots of the same menu bar.  This news is the latest ‘evidence’ that hints Twitter is gearing up for a move into commerce. It was reported in June of this year by Re/Code that a “<a href="http://recode.net/2014/06/30/buy-now-buttons-start-appearing-in-tweets-is-twitter-shopping-finally-here/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Twitter Shopping">buy now</a>” button began appearing in tweets, linking to retail website, Fancy. Re/Code also came across documents, which appeared to show commerce plans for Twitter.  It has also been rumoured that Twitter has been working on a deal with payments provider <a href="https://stripe.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Stripe">Stripe</a>.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Obviously at this point in time it is all just speculation, and is very unclear as to what Twitter has planned.  The ‘payment and shipping’ option in the Android app does seem to tie in with other clues that have surfaced.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
This e-commerce menu is perhaps the most intriguing piece of ‘evidence’ that has come to light though.  If this were the start of an e-commerce initiative by the social networking giant, it would give brand names a fresh reason to engage with Twitter.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">

Now You Can Explore The Moon And Mars With Google Maps

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Google has just put some really neat 3D images, which you can explore, of the Moon and Mars in their Maps software.  This coincides with the 2nd anniversary of the NASA <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/msl/index.html#.U-OG0IBdUVE" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Couriosity Rover">Curiosity rover </a>touching down on Martian soil.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
In real life it would be quite some feat to be able to navigate to the Moon and the red planet and take a look around.  But doing so in Google Maps is pretty easy, as long as you know whereabouts to click.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
First of all navigate to Google Maps. Now look down in the bottom left and you should see an icon, which lets you put the map in “Google Earth” mode. Enable that mode. Wait for the map to load in 3D and then begin zooming out. In fact you need to zoom out as far as you can possible do.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Once you have zoomed all the way out, wait a second and you should see options for “Moon” and “Mars” that should appear at the bottom of your screen. If nothing shows up, you will have to adjust your settings as you may have the “Explore” tab closed. To remedy this, just click the pair of upward arrows in the bottom right to expand the Explore drawer.  That’s it and I must say I love it!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Now we can view not just our planet, but the Moon and Mars too.  If you want to check out some cool things on Google Maps just navigate to Google Maps and check out whatever you like.  Now I’m sure I spotted a <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/@51.492137,-0.192878,3a,64.7y,291.16h,72.34t/data=!3m5!1e1!3m3!1sc9UMhWP_MWm9U0L48xEjYw!2e0!3e5?hl=en" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="TARDIS">TARDIS</a>around here somewhere.</div>

Man Dies Taking Selfie with Gun

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
With the advent of <a href="http://www.instagram.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Instagram">Instagram</a> and Facebook, the word ‘selfies’ will probably make it into the newest edition of Webster’s Dictionary.  But when do selfies go too far?  Tragically, a 21 year old man from Mexico has died while taking a selfie.  How?  He tried to pose with a gun!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Oscar Otero Aguilar was having a night out with his friends, drinking and having a good time.  However, he decided that taking a selfie with a loaded gun would be a good idea, reports <a href="http://www.proceso.com.mx/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="proceso">Proceso</a>, a Mexican news site.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Many of us have tried juggling food, drinks or even a friend while trying to take a self portrait for <a href="http://www.facebook.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Facebook">Facebook</a>.  Unfortunately, for young Aguilar, he tried holding a loaded gun and his camera.  The gun went off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW3gttI6cLXnfOETbbL6vhoj20TmTd3rvGBk8gcPLIMoL600lFOgAYJr_tGWZc15-zaHTY2q47d8-rnvghi_bGf6mQg29-H_jC-vOf429NKdqAa3vfT0608J8lk4jp80AdA-2-7817vM8/s1600/manshootshimselftakingselfie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW3gttI6cLXnfOETbbL6vhoj20TmTd3rvGBk8gcPLIMoL600lFOgAYJr_tGWZc15-zaHTY2q47d8-rnvghi_bGf6mQg29-H_jC-vOf429NKdqAa3vfT0608J8lk4jp80AdA-2-7817vM8/s1600/manshootshimselftakingselfie.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Police were called by the neighbour who heard the gun go off.  He then rushed over to find Aguilar still alive; but by the time the police arrived, he was dead.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Omar Abner Campos Vives, one of Aguilar’s friends, was arrested while his other friend, ‘El Paco’, is on the run.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Even though there was an arrest, it appears the death was a fatal mistake.  The safety was not on and the gun was loaded.  Aguilar must have been unfamiliar with the safe use of firearms.  Of course those who know how to use firearms safely would probably never pose with one aimed at their head.  Even if it was unloaded.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Nobody knows where he got the gun but tragically, it was his last selfie.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Since the Oscars, selfies have gained momentum.  Since A-listers were caught on twitter posing for a selfie, people have adopted this new fad.  Phone companies are in a race to increase the mega-pixels on their front-facing cameras to make selfies more clear.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Although this is probably the first case of death while taking a selfie, people should always be reminded that technology should never be abused.  There is no need to show off for a photo if it means your life!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">

Bittorrent To Provide NSA Proof Online Calls & Messaging Software

<a href="http://www.bittorrent.com/" style="background-color: white; color: #0092dd; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;" target="_blank" title="bittorrent">BitTorrent</a><span style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;"> has recently announced a preliminary, test version of BitTorrent Bleep.  This software will enable people to make voice calls and send messages over the Internet without using a central server to direct traffic.  The system instead works by users finding one another through groups of other users.  There are no records of the calls or texts stored anywhere along the route.  When a connection is made for a call, the communication will travel directly between the two computers involved and it is this peer-to-peer approach, which defies mass surveillance.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiymnR0WavpHRVhZZZB7msLEB6IFkYtkdPL-85QL_9BZ3bpHAn_SZIqiUJjUkyV8DXm4oY8Y8MBD56CEcmGaw_n-ce0Zt2OzB0MkPZ5w5JH9wuRqb4n3dKqvG9TdG5V6hc0Jv7EZ0BG-2Y/s1600/bleep.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiymnR0WavpHRVhZZZB7msLEB6IFkYtkdPL-85QL_9BZ3bpHAn_SZIqiUJjUkyV8DXm4oY8Y8MBD56CEcmGaw_n-ce0Zt2OzB0MkPZ5w5JH9wuRqb4n3dKqvG9TdG5V6hc0Jv7EZ0BG-2Y/s1600/bleep.png" /></a></div>

OK, even the best system can, and probably will, be monitored at some point.  But <a href="http://blog.bittorrent.com/2014/07/30/bittorrents-chat-client-unveiled-bittorrent-bleep-now-in-invite-only-pre-alpha/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Bleep">Bleep</a> unquestionably will make the job a lot harder than the most common online calling and messaging apps do.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The software is only being made available by invitation for now, the company has said, presumably because it will still need the rough edges ironing out. One major issue is Bleep is limited to computers that are running Windows 7 or 8.  They have said that support for more platforms is coming in the future.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
This new software shows BitTorrent’s effort to locate more applications for the distributed-computing tech, which underlies its file-sharing software. The firm launched <a href="http://blog.bittorrent.com/category/sync/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Bit Torrent Sync">BitTorrent Sync</a> in 2013 to give people a substitute to cloud-based programs, which synchronize files across multiple devices.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The current online calling and messaging services will preserve the privacy of users by scrambling the communications between both the sender and the recipient. The issue with this is; they rely on central servers to deal with the electronic signals that establish the connection. And because of this, the metadata, which passes through those servers, can be intercepted and monitored.  This could potentially expose the calls and texts to surveillance.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
BitTorrent has been working on Bleep since (at least) September 2013, when they announced a plan to develop a secure online chat service.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">

Don’t Call The Police When Facebook Crashes

I’ve heard of people calling the police for some awful reasons before, like them getting the wrong items from the drive-thru window, but I have never heard of the police being called for something as meaningless as Facebook crashing; until now, that is. That’s right – at least one police department in the United States has received phone calls when the Facebook site has gone down.<br />
<br />
Last Friday, Facebook apparently went down for an extended time. And for some people in Los Angeles County, it proved to be just a little too much for those who may or may not have Facebook addictions. Instead of doing something else online or simply choosing to get away from the phone or the computer for a while, some people began to call the police department to report that Facebook wasn’t working. In case you’re not aware, the police couldn’t care less if Facebook is working or not – they have actual jobs to do. In a classic response to the calls, Sgt. Burton Brink took to Twitter to address the issue(s).<br />

Can you believe that people would actually call the police and report that Facebook isn’t working? What did they expect them to do – go out and arrest Zuckerberg wherever he was? Really, folks, let’s all exercise a little common sense before we decide to call the police.</div>

Despite a bumpy road, <a href="https://bitcoin.org/en/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="bitcoin">Bitcoin</a> is still a big player in the financial world and the third largest PC seller on the planet,<a href="http://www.dell.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="dell">Dell</a>, has become the latest in a long line of US retailers to begin accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment online.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
In recent months many businesses including travel company <a href="http://www.expedia.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="expedia">Expedia</a> and Overstock.com have started to accept the online virtual currency.  A large percentage of the firms who are using the Bitcoin service have opted to use the payment processor start-up Coinbase.  Dell is by far the biggest company to have made the move to accept Bitcoin.  This move could potentially drag the crypto-currency that little bit closer towards a mainstream adoption.</div>

Laura Thomas from Dell, made the announcement in a <a href="http://en.community.dell.com/dell-blogs/direct2dell/b/direct2dell/archive/2014/07/18/we-re-now-accepting-bitcoin-on-dell-com.aspx" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Bitcoin Blog">blog post</a> on the company website, saying that it was “excited to bring you the choice and flexibility this payment option offers”. The I.T. firm’s website also has listed various benefits of using crypto-currencies: “Bitcoin payments can be made easily from anywhere in the world, and offer reduced payment processing costs…You have complete control over your bitcoin, so your bitcoin account isn’t tied to any financial institutions, can’t be frozen and carries lower transaction fees than most major credit cards.”</div>

Co-founder of Coinbase Fred Ehrsam, said that it took only two weeks to go from planning to launching the feature: “We’ve fostered a close partnership with the Dell team and that’s been instrumental in getting the Coinbase integration up and running in such a short timeframe. We look forward to continuing to support the team as they explore other ways to offer even more functionality when it comes to bitcoin payments.”  There is a downside if you happen to live outside the US! Unfortunately for potential UK customers (like myself), Bitcoin as a payment option is not available at the moment.</div>

If You Use Facebook At All, You’ve Been Experimented On

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Are you a regular Facebooker? Have you used it at all? Even a little bit? Maybe you are a faithful, every day (multiple times a day, of course) user, or maybe you only log on a couple times a week at most just to see what’s going on with all of your “friends”. Whatever the case, however much or however little you use Facebook, one thing seems to be true: <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmirhill/2014/07/07/ex-facebook-data-scientist-every-facebook-user-is-part-of-an-experiment-at-some-point/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank">at some point or another you have been part of some kind of Facebook experiment</a>. In other words, without you even knowing about it, you’ve been a test subject for Facebook. You’ve been a lab rat, and you haven’t even seen the spinning wheel they had you running on while the powers that be watched you and compiled notes for discussion later.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Now, the big “experiment” that’s recently been revealed concerns Facebook’s manipulation of several thousand news feeds over a week period a couple years ago. Facebook wanted to see what people would do if they saw only positive news stories vs. if they saw only negative stories. While that may not sound like a huge deal, there are a lot of people who are now upset about it because they had no idea they were part of any kind of an experiment.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbGhbi9XJUTMI-bEYpk5xwUYAmaqX6WGPsLTOW9aO89bsc7h_CtHyt-4fOx4a4bOeRZW1OOS71FPb5Ynd0tKFyBt0SM6l4VIURYfalGuMK_DPEr6gs_y1RwYib47ISbyKa2D9gHfFdEEw/s1600/facebook-experiments-21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbGhbi9XJUTMI-bEYpk5xwUYAmaqX6WGPsLTOW9aO89bsc7h_CtHyt-4fOx4a4bOeRZW1OOS71FPb5Ynd0tKFyBt0SM6l4VIURYfalGuMK_DPEr6gs_y1RwYib47ISbyKa2D9gHfFdEEw/s1600/facebook-experiments-21.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Now, before everyone freaks out wondering what kind of testing they’ve been a part of, we should all probably take a collective deep breath and calm down for a moment.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
A former data scientist for Facebook, Andrew Ledvina, worked for the social media giant until 2014. He talked to a reporter and let loose some things he probably wishes he would’ve kept to himself for a little longer. Here was the big one for me: “Experiments are run on every user at some point in their tenure on the site.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
What are those experiments? They’re probably not as earth shattering as the news feed manipulation story, but they consist of little things such as various text sizes, ads, and different buttons, etc.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
But here’s the thing – every single user (according to the ex-employee) has been part of an experiment at some time or another. Maybe it was a small one, like the above examples, or maybe it was a big one. But how will they ever know? They probably won’t.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
What are your thoughts? Are you okay with being part of Facebook’s endless experiments? Let us know your thoughts regarding this story in the comments section below!</div>

The Worst Computer Viruses Ever!

<span style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">Over the years we have all become more and more dependent on the Internet and although this has resulted in advances in technology, at the same time it has left us vulnerable to hackers.  Let’s take a look at some of the worst viruses that have infected the Internet and just how disastrous they were</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVVWWo4LZzwnnM8WK0Cs_D1Fwu6ASdsRzAq3KhUImcAvAHMB1VPKMFZO58oLkqY4FblJ-FiP0sxS3CcffYhsc194gzphsyVwSAGmxC6vzm9-tMHl6vzHZ2wNeYHGJ5xfTUDxkpVbhfuu0/s1600/pcvirus1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVVWWo4LZzwnnM8WK0Cs_D1Fwu6ASdsRzAq3KhUImcAvAHMB1VPKMFZO58oLkqY4FblJ-FiP0sxS3CcffYhsc194gzphsyVwSAGmxC6vzm9-tMHl6vzHZ2wNeYHGJ5xfTUDxkpVbhfuu0/s1600/pcvirus1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Segoe UI', Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
I Love You – 2000</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Back in the year 2000, the I Love You virus targeted its victims through email. An email was sent with an accompanying attachment, which when opened unleashed a malicious program that overwrote users’ image files. The purpose of the virus was to steal Internet access passwords and quickly spread because it would email itself to the first fifty contacts in every Windows address book that it was able to get into.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
It was able to infect around 500,000 PCs and cause approximately $15,000,000,000 in damage. Some speculated that it originated from Onel de Guzman of the Philippines but the authorities said there wasn’t sufficient evidence and charges were dropped.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhCQbgHd60VJlnycWm4Z0lmVRoJboHCkdaj0qhPLY0s2BjseNASeLCp8MNuj73JMVzWavy6u_EmirkQYW-xkz41B8Ky4yQkPTwAzG1VA4k7ANx_vjlG-UoWpaz8cyN2pYnc0hlIPh7mII/s1600/pcvirus2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="410" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhCQbgHd60VJlnycWm4Z0lmVRoJboHCkdaj0qhPLY0s2BjseNASeLCp8MNuj73JMVzWavy6u_EmirkQYW-xkz41B8Ky4yQkPTwAzG1VA4k7ANx_vjlG-UoWpaz8cyN2pYnc0hlIPh7mII/s1600/pcvirus2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Segoe UI', Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
Code Red – 2001</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Code Red was a worm that exploited an operating system vulnerability in PCs running Windows 2000 and Windows NT. It worked by randomly selecting IP addresses and then scanning them for the Microsoft system before infecting the relevant PCs. It was able to deface and take down websites, which famously included the whitehouse.gov website. This prompted other government agencies to take down their public websites as a protection.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
It successfully infected 1,000,000 PCs and caused damage that amounted to $2,600,000,000.</div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Segoe UI', Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
MyDoom – 2004</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Another virus that was able to spread itself through email was MyDoom, which cleverly disguised itself as a bounced message. Once the email was opened by the unsuspecting user, the malicious code was downloaded and then stole information from the Outlook address book. In managed to cause $38,000,000,000 of damage and affect 2,000,000 machines.</div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Segoe UI', Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
Storm Worm – 2006</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
This Trojan horse program left PCs vulnerable to remote control by the hacker behind the virus. Users were tricked into downloading the malicious program due to fake links to news stories or videos. In some cases the hackers used Storm Worm to create botnets in order to send spam emails across the Internet.</div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Segoe UI', Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
Slammer – 2003</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Another Internet worm that was also known as Sapphire, Slammer infected around 200,000 PCs and caused $1,200,000,000 of damage. It released a huge amount of network packets, bringing many servers to a halt. It was able to infect so many because it randomly selected IP addresses in order to find vulnerable victims. It’s victims included the 911 emergency response system in Washington and Continental Airlines.</div>

Finally,  you can save those newsfeed bits and pieces you haven’t had the time to look at.  <a href="http://www.facebook.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Facebook">Facebook</a> has recently revealed their latest ‘Save’ feature.  It allows users to bookmark items on newsfeed they’d like to view at a later time.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Software engineer from Facebook, Daniel Giambalvo, states: ”Every day, people find all sorts of interesting items on Facebook that they don’t have time to explore right away.  Now you can save items that you find on Facebook to check out later when you have more time.”</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmpOrJJ-jjoihHJGMmzaObJTfO6LwQ8nKlP9xcwXkfWs7qZqnrPihdGNHuV4aXRDKbvgs3omFNSoU8sd4VMpDP2jZQUiccsvhuQD4VwH1o15HesnAtI3N2z1_QuWOAN5k9A0-rrilaoMg/s1600/facebook.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="390" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmpOrJJ-jjoihHJGMmzaObJTfO6LwQ8nKlP9xcwXkfWs7qZqnrPihdGNHuV4aXRDKbvgs3omFNSoU8sd4VMpDP2jZQUiccsvhuQD4VwH1o15HesnAtI3N2z1_QuWOAN5k9A0-rrilaoMg/s1600/facebook.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
So what can you save?  Pretty much anything you want!  Links, movies, music, TV, places and videos are all fair game!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The good thing about this feature is that saved items are only available for users to view.  However, should you wish to share your save list with your friends, there will be a share-with-friends option.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
In order to view your items in the ‘Save’list, you simply click on the ‘More’tab on your mobile or click the side panel on the left side of your computer browser.  Very simple!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Another good feature of ‘save’will be its organisation.  Your items will be categorised and you can share items or move things into an archive.  You will also get reminders in your newsfeed so that you don’t forget what you have in your ‘save’folder.  You’ll never miss your favourite video again!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
‘Save’will be available to <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/facebook/id284882215?mt=8" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Facebook iOS">iOS</a>, Android and Internet web browsers in just a few days.  But if you want any questions answered about the new feature, the Facebook Help Centre is available for questioning.  Facebook is also testing a new ‘buy’option where users can purchase things directly through their news feeds.  We may never have to leave our houses again!</div>

Yahoo Launches Ending Service

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
<a href="http://www.yahoo.co.jp/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Yahoo Japan">Yahoo Japan</a> is helping a person to prepare for the inevitable that comes to all human beings.  Well, digitally anyway.  The firm is offering “Yahoo Ending,” a service, which amongst other things, allows account holders from Japan to send e-mails to loved ones after they have died.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Megumi Nakashima, a spokeswoman for the company said, “Yahoo Japan’s job has been to solve social problems through the power of the Internet and to provide services from the cradle to the grave…We had services for the cradle part but not the grave part.” The new ‘<a href="http://ending.yahoo.co.jp/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Ending Service">Ending service</a>’ is being portrayed as a means to address the problems that are encountered by families around the globe, who don’t have the passwords or legal authority that is necessary to shut down the online accounts of relatives who have died.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdcjvz0KZo3FtI7O8hSM3u73Wj4y5qpJG6ZnqRCfHMvXBqbufIjEFCOzYvFRpOorSVETrJE8zsjr0SHu0smVfvI9pR6OlyfiYV7ZJWwIm-T5kBHg17oFtqYoUQK1yWrKKX5NDsF2MckJ0/s1600/yahoo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="408" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdcjvz0KZo3FtI7O8hSM3u73Wj4y5qpJG6ZnqRCfHMvXBqbufIjEFCOzYvFRpOorSVETrJE8zsjr0SHu0smVfvI9pR6OlyfiYV7ZJWwIm-T5kBHg17oFtqYoUQK1yWrKKX5NDsF2MckJ0/s1600/yahoo.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
End-of-life preparation is also known as “shukatsu”. The basic service that Yahoo offers will deactivate the Yahoo user account after the person has died. The account holder can also opt to have their documents, photos and videos deleted from their ‘Yahoo Box’ online storage accounts and their subscription services linked to Yahoo Wallet cancelled as well.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Yahoo will send an e-mail the user has previously prepared, to as many as 200 addresses and open a “memorial space” bulletin board where people can leave online condolence messages. The service costs $1.80 a month.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Yahoo Japan’s Web site shows an animated video, which asks, “If today was the last day of your life, would you be ready for the journey?”  The Yahoo Ending site includes a video, which shows how the service will work; a family is sitting in a living room when all of their phones beep. It then shows the sort of message a family may receive: “If you’re reading this now it means I’ve already left this world. . . . I promised that I would never die before you, my wife, so I’m sorry. I had a really happy life thanks to you.”  In the video the son says, “It’s so much like Dad, who thought so much about us,” “We have to fulfil this because it’s his last wish. Mom, don’t worry about a thing leave it all to us.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
When the user registers for the service, they receive a booking number to share with a trusted individual.  When they die, that person then calls a Yahoo Ending service number and gives them the booking number.  Once this happens the deceased’s funeral preferences are then shared. The funeral home will send the cremation permit to Yahoo to trigger the e-mail cast and the file deletion.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
In conjunction with a funeral services firm called <a href="http://www.kamakura-net.co.jp/newstopics/1405304029-320914.html" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Kamakura">Kamakura Shinsho</a>, Yahoo offers advice on how to write a will, plan a funeral and locate a grave.  The basic package that is offered through Yahoo Japan will cost approximately $4,500, including the funeral, embalming and cremation and a wake for 30 people.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
What do you think? Is this a service that could catch on in the US or Eurpoe?  As always, if you would like to leave a sensible comment, then please do so in the comments section below.</div>
