Sharks Keep On Eating Google’s Underwater Cables

All companies have problems. Some of those problems are pretty common across the board, such as meeting the budget, hiring/firing the right people, meeting customer needs, meeting quotas, etc. And then there’s some companies who have problems none of us have really even dreamed of, such as Google. It seems they’re having to deal with sharks. Now, it’s tempting to think of certain individuals as “sharks”, but Google means it quite literally. Their progress at taking over the <del>world</del> ocean is actually being slowed down <a href="http://gizmodo.com/confused-sharks-keep-trying-to-eat-googles-undersea-dat-1621591475" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank">because sharks in the ocean keep on eating all of their undersea data cables</a>.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
It turns out Google operates thousands and thousands of miles of fiber-optic cables around the world, and some of them happen to be in the ocean. And, for some unknown reason, sharks have been trying to eat them. Maybe they’re not Google fans, I don’t know. So, Google has lately had to take some steps to pretty much encase their data cables in a “Kevlar-like” material. Either way, those cables can’t be good on the digestive system.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">

It remains to be seen if reinforcing the cables will have any effect on the sharks who are trying to eat them. Maybe it will make them more persistent in the long run.</div>

There has been a great deal of news in the field of wearable technology of late, especially in medical circles.  The latest initiative is a collaborative effort by a medical device company, <a href="http://www.bioserenity.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="bioserenity">Bioserenity</a> (from France), an epilepsy organization, <a href="https://www.epilepsy.org.uk/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Epilepsy Action">Epilepsy Action</a> from the UK and another French organization called <a href="http://efappe.epilepsies.fr/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="efappe">Efappe</a>. Their combined efforts have led to the first of a kind smart clothing system and a companion app, which helps monitor and diagnose epilepsy.</div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The conventional epilepsy diagnosis and treatments rely on seizure recordings through fixed monitoring systems that are only available in hospital. Most often that not, the patients’ seizures are not recorded; this is partly due to the limited accessibility of these fixed systems.  This lack of seizure information for patients has a knock on effect and leads to suboptimal diagnosis and treatments for the individuals concerned.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The WEMU smartwear system aims to improve the accuracy of diagnosis, reduce the diagnostic time and assist in designing a more accurate drug course of therapy for the patient.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The WEMU system consists of a smart shirt and a smart hat.  The clothing has embedded dry-sensors, which constantly monitor the patient’s cardiac, muscle and brain activities. The sensors are connected to a battery pack that is rechargeable, through embedded electronic circuitry.The physiological data that is obtained from the sensors is transmitted to a smartphone app via low energy Bluetooth. The smartphone app then analyzes the received data and allows the data to be visualized by the patient or a healthcare professional. The smartphone data can also be uploaded, through a secure connection, to a cloud system to allow for a medical professional to view the data from a remote location.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
In addition to improving the diagnosis and treatment for patients, the WEMU system also allows for more accurate information on the occurrences of seizures that is valuable to the epilepsy research community.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The people behind WEMU are now running an <a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/wemu-a-revolution-in-epilepsy-monitoring-and-diagnosis" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="WEMU Campaign">Indiegogo campaign</a> in order to raise funds to further develop the product and take it to market.  This is the kind of medical tech that really should be backed as it could help a massive amount of people who currently suffer from this neurological disorder.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">

Restaurant in China is Staffed By Robots

<h1 style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial; font-size: 22px; margin: 0px 0px 1em;">
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
One of my favorite things to do is to go out and eat at a restaurant. And while I like the occasional fast food experience, I really prefer a sit-down kind of meal. It really doesn’t matter where I go, though, the experience is just about the same. I check in with the hostess, get seated, wait for the waiter (there’s an oxymoron), order a drink, order food, get my food, eat my food, pay the bill, and leave the restaurant. Whether I’m eating at an Olive Garden or some kind of upscale, ritzy place, it’s all about the same. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing – it’s just the way it is. But it’s not the way it has to be.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
There’s a restaurant in China – in Kunshan, in the province of Jiangsu, to be exact – that does all of the above,<a href="http://news.yahoo.com/robo-cook-android-restaurant-boots-china-062418815.html" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank">except they do it with robots</a>. That’s right – you’re greeted by robots, seated by robots, given your food and drinks by robots – the whole deal. They even understand 40 some sentences. And it sounds awesome. It sounds like a trip to China needs to be in my future.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
<img alt="Restaurant In China Is Staffed By Robots" class="lazy alignnone size-full wp-image-18059 data-lazy-ready" data-lazy-src="http://news.filehippo.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Part-HKG-Hkg10088595-1-1-0.jpg" data-lazy-type="image" height="460" src="http://news.filehippo.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Part-HKG-Hkg10088595-1-1-0.jpg" style="background: rgb(236, 240, 244); display: inline; float: none; max-width: 708px; padding: 10px;" width="708" /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Heck, robots even cook the food in the restaurant’s kitchen.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
After a 2-hour charge, each of the robots can work a 5-hour shift. While they can only move on certain tracks in the floor, if a customer gets in their way, they will nicely ask them to step aside so they can pass.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
It seems many businesses are turning to robots because they don’t have to be paid a salary, and they don’t come with the problems of human workers, such as needing time off, calling in sick, etc. Each of the robots costs somewhere in the realm of $6,500.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
What do you think? Can you picture a day when restaurants will be staffed with more robots than people? Let us know your thoughts regarding this story in the comments section below!</div>

New 3D Tool Fills In Missing Parts Of Images

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
A lot of exciting projects are coming out of Carnegie Mellon University lately.  Dr. Yaser Sheikh, a computer scientist and his team, has recently created a digital editing tool that helps users manipulate objects in a photograph so that they can expose areas not in the original image.  For instance, users can turn a chair around to see the backside of it.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
How does the software do this?  3D models of objects in our everyday surroundings are used by the software to “imagine what is not visible,”said Sheikh.  The software uses numerical data from the models and the software ‘guesses’what the object might look like if it were moved in the picture.  Quite intelligent stuff, really.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjINjqhwBDsgAOtb95EsxGVpL8h6Dhf-hrJwIPngsVmpMSGw2Ph8XtmEzLHCXQX9fbFy13C6KwSwcUV4yTqwWYneXFym0YEUMho2PP1wAu5FgZLI6IJwWBr7nR9ZyJs6zQ1RrQ5pF4B3_4/s1600/3dtoolsfill.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjINjqhwBDsgAOtb95EsxGVpL8h6Dhf-hrJwIPngsVmpMSGw2Ph8XtmEzLHCXQX9fbFy13C6KwSwcUV4yTqwWYneXFym0YEUMho2PP1wAu5FgZLI6IJwWBr7nR9ZyJs6zQ1RrQ5pF4B3_4/s1600/3dtoolsfill.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Another aspect of the software is that it uses pixels in the image to guess the colour, lighting and texture of the object after it has been moved around.  Sheikh states, “It infers the 3-D lighting of the whole scene to create somewhat realistic shadows.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Perhaps you have photos that you are not quite happy with?  Perhaps you’d like to manipulate some photos to make them more exciting?  Now you can with this new software.  The best thing about it is that it is currently available for free, online, from the Carnegie Mellon computer science <a href="http://www.cs.cmu.edu/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="cs.cmu">website</a>.  You can even download the <a href="http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~om3d/papers/SIGGRAPH2014.pdf" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Original Paper">original paper</a> published by the team so you can learn the ins and outs of 3D object manipulation.Natasha Kholgade, Sheikh’s doctoral student, led the project and will decide whether the technology will be sold at a profit.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Shiekh and his colleagues are appearing at the <a href="http://www.siggraph.org/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="siggraph">International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques</a> in Vancouver, British Columbia taking place this week, to show their findings.</div>

What Apple Is Doing About Lack of Diversity in the Workplace

"I'm not satisfied with the numbers on this page," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. "They’re not new to us, and we’ve been working hard for quite some time to improve them. We are making progress, and we’re committed to being as innovative in advancing diversity as we are in developing our products."</div>

Apple became the latest technology company to voluntarily disclose the diversity of their workforce -- showing the racial disparity in Silicon Valley.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
A breakdown shows 54 percent of the company's technology jobs in the United States are held by whites, while Asians hold 23 percent of the jobs. White people make up 64 percent of Apple's leadership positions in the U.S., followed by Asians at 21 percent.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
Cook said the iPad and iPhone maker recently pledged $100 million to President Obama's ConnectED project, which aims to bring digital learning and cutting edge technology to economically challenged schools. Cook said 80 percent of the student population that will benefit from the high tech investment are from groups that are under-represented in Silicon Valley.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">

For a company that burst onto the personal computing market in the Steve Jobs era with the slogan "think different," Apple employees are now hearing another call to action from Cook: "Inclusion inspires innovation."</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">

Once complete, the cable will operate at 60 terabits per second, which is about ten million times faster than the typical cable modem, Urs Hölzle, Google's senior vice president of technical infrastructure, said today in a Google+ post.</div>
