Sharks Keep On Eating Google’s Underwater Cables

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
All companies have problems. Some of those problems are pretty common across the board, such as meeting the budget, hiring/firing the right people, meeting customer needs, meeting quotas, etc. And then there’s some companies who have problems none of us have really even dreamed of, such as Google. It seems they’re having to deal with sharks. Now, it’s tempting to think of certain individuals as “sharks”, but Google means it quite literally. Their progress at taking over the <del>world</del> ocean is actually being slowed down <a href="http://gizmodo.com/confused-sharks-keep-trying-to-eat-googles-undersea-dat-1621591475" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank">because sharks in the ocean keep on eating all of their undersea data cables</a>.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
It turns out Google operates thousands and thousands of miles of fiber-optic cables around the world, and some of them happen to be in the ocean. And, for some unknown reason, sharks have been trying to eat them. Maybe they’re not Google fans, I don’t know. So, Google has lately had to take some steps to pretty much encase their data cables in a “Kevlar-like” material. Either way, those cables can’t be good on the digestive system.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">

It remains to be seen if reinforcing the cables will have any effect on the sharks who are trying to eat them. Maybe it will make them more persistent in the long run.</div>

There has been a great deal of news in the field of wearable technology of late, especially in medical circles.  The latest initiative is a collaborative effort by a medical device company, <a href="http://www.bioserenity.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="bioserenity">Bioserenity</a> (from France), an epilepsy organization, <a href="https://www.epilepsy.org.uk/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Epilepsy Action">Epilepsy Action</a> from the UK and another French organization called <a href="http://efappe.epilepsies.fr/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="efappe">Efappe</a>. Their combined efforts have led to the first of a kind smart clothing system and a companion app, which helps monitor and diagnose epilepsy.</div>
<div class="wp-caption alignnone" id="attachment_18046" style="background: rgb(236, 240, 244); color: #5f6d80; float: none; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px; padding: 10px; text-align: center; width: 718px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The conventional epilepsy diagnosis and treatments rely on seizure recordings through fixed monitoring systems that are only available in hospital. Most often that not, the patients’ seizures are not recorded; this is partly due to the limited accessibility of these fixed systems.  This lack of seizure information for patients has a knock on effect and leads to suboptimal diagnosis and treatments for the individuals concerned.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The WEMU smartwear system aims to improve the accuracy of diagnosis, reduce the diagnostic time and assist in designing a more accurate drug course of therapy for the patient.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The WEMU system consists of a smart shirt and a smart hat.  The clothing has embedded dry-sensors, which constantly monitor the patient’s cardiac, muscle and brain activities. The sensors are connected to a battery pack that is rechargeable, through embedded electronic circuitry.The physiological data that is obtained from the sensors is transmitted to a smartphone app via low energy Bluetooth. The smartphone app then analyzes the received data and allows the data to be visualized by the patient or a healthcare professional. The smartphone data can also be uploaded, through a secure connection, to a cloud system to allow for a medical professional to view the data from a remote location.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
In addition to improving the diagnosis and treatment for patients, the WEMU system also allows for more accurate information on the occurrences of seizures that is valuable to the epilepsy research community.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The people behind WEMU are now running an <a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/wemu-a-revolution-in-epilepsy-monitoring-and-diagnosis" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="WEMU Campaign">Indiegogo campaign</a> in order to raise funds to further develop the product and take it to market.  This is the kind of medical tech that really should be backed as it could help a massive amount of people who currently suffer from this neurological disorder.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">

Man Allegedly Used Siri To Help Him Commit Murder

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
I’ll be the first person to admit that I’ve tried to use Siri to do some stupid things. I’ve asker her to tell me jokes, if she’s single, what her favorite music is, what the answer to certain math problems are – heck, I even asked her to marry me once to see what kind of a comeback she’d answer with. I have too much time on my hands sometimes. But you know something I’ve never asked Siri? I’ve never once asked her where to hide someone’s body. Nope. Not even close. Hopefully none of you reading this have ever asked that question either.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
But Pedro Bravo, a 20-year-old man from Florida who is currently on trial for the murder of his friend and roommate<a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/florida-man-accused-of-killing-his-roommate-asked-siri-where-to-hide-the-body-9665437.html" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank">allegedly did just that</a>. In fact, it seems evidence from his smartphone is starting to mount against him. His roommate, Christian Aguilar, went missing on 9/28/12, and his body wasn’t located until it was found in a shallow grave several weeks after he was killed. Sometime before he was killed, though, evidence was found on Bravo’s phone which showed him telling Siri: “I need to hide my roommate.” Siri allegedly responded in classic Siri tone.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">

Siri allegedly responded with the above image: “What kind of place are you looking for: swamps, reservoirs, metal foundries, dumps?” Prosecutors also have shown that Bravo used the flashlight app on his phone several times between 11:31 PM and 12:01 AM on the night his “friend” disappeared, and that the phone’s location data does not match where he said he was at the time.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">

Ex-Google Engineer Turns iPad Into A Teacher With Osmo

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Is your child addicted to his iPad?  Rather then taking it away, use it to your benefit!  Pramod Sharma, an ex-Google engineer, has used the iPad’s addictive quality to an educational advantage.  Osmo uses the cameras and display of the iPad and turns any table into a learning lab that is interactive.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
In a <a href="http://fastnewsmag.blogspot.com/2014/08/tangible-plays-osmo-for-ipad.html" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Osmo ">previous article</a> about this product, you learned that Osmo used letter tiles, coloured blocks etc as video game controllers when they were put in the camera’s view.  It recognises objects that trigger animations.  Osmo currently has over a million dollars in pre-orders and is on its way to the mass market in time for Christmas.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
<img alt="Children are engaged with technology more than ever before." class="lazy alignnone wp-image-18022 size-full data-lazy-ready" data-lazy-src="http://news.filehippo.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/osmo.jpg" data-lazy-type="image" height="397" src="http://news.filehippo.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/osmo.jpg" style="background: rgb(236, 240, 244); display: inline; float: none; max-width: 708px; padding: 10px;" width="708" /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
But how was it designed?  There will be three apps that come with Osmo: Tangram, Words and Newton.  But what is really exciting is that Sharma plans to allow third party developers to create games for the system.  Sharma states, “we believe we can add magic to so many existing tangible experiences.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
How did Osmo come into existence?  As a parent and Google product designer, Sharma didn’t like how much time his daughter spent using technology.   He says, “intuitively it felt wrong for her to be hunched over playing games for so long, and she would just sort of tune the rest of the world out while she played.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Osmo is simple. Things like circuit boards, power cables or Bluetooth are not built into the Osmo.  It simply uses the iPad cameras and mirrors to redirect the camera.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Children do not touch the screen often, they interactively play with everyday objects that they can take from their own toys.  The iPad will become a social experience as children will want to invite their friends over for play dates.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Sharma and co-founder, Jerome Scholler, started by creating hand carved models from wood.  They got TechShop memberships so they could move their design forward.  “As we worked, our target was ‘how would Apple, or <a href="http://www.pixar.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Pixar">Pixar</a>, or Google build this?  We kept working until we had built something that could stand alongside that level of quality,”states Sharma.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Even packaging was important for them to consider.  Recognising that the iPad would obviously be used for other means, the mirror can be stored in the base dock when the <a href="http://www.apple.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Apple">iPad</a> is removed.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Osmo has raised an undisclosed amount of money using crowdfunding pre-orders.  “We were pretty confident that Osmo’s new take on play would resonate with other parents and educators,”states Sharma. “We would eventually need to invest in our own website, so why not start with it?”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The toy market is incredibly hard to break into but Sharma believes he has created something truly productive.  “The trick is to offer products that are truly joyful, intuitive and engaging in a very crowded space,”he says. “I have a daughter and I can tell you that its really hard to keep her engaged with something just because it’s educational or high-tech or good for her.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Would you like to try out the <a href="https://www.playosmo.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Osmo">Osmo</a>?  Pre-orders are being taken for October deliver at only $49.  Grab yours today!</div>

Tangible Play’s Osmo For iPad

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Children are now super adept at using gadgets!  Sometimes more adept than parents!  18 month olds can find Peppa Pig on <a href="http://www.youtube.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="youtube">YouTub</a>e faster before their first words are even uttered! (I know this because my 18 month old has done it!)</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
But there is always the worry that technology is starting to overtake ‘real’toys!  There are always complaints that children don’t use physical manipulatives as much anymore.  However, what about having technology mixed with a great toy?  Osmo has created an exciting new application and tangible game where children can play with real world toys that interact with the <a href="http://www.apple.com/ipad" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="iPad">iPad</a>’s screen!  You can already pre-order Osmo’s new game through crowdfunding.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
<img alt="osmo" class="lazy alignnone size-full wp-image-15688 data-lazy-ready" data-lazy-src="http://news.filehippo.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/creativity.org_.jpg" data-lazy-type="image" height="380" src="http://news.filehippo.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/creativity.org_.jpg" style="background: rgb(236, 240, 244); display: inline; float: none; max-width: 708px; padding: 10px;" width="708" /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Osmo has three unique parts: there is the software, the game pieces and the iPad stand.  The whole thing runs by a smart mirror attachment which points the camera at the table top in order to ‘see’the players manipulating game pieces.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
There will be three games launched.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Firstly, Newton gets players to build structures that escorts orbs into various goals set out.  Using paper, pencils or other physical objects, players must ‘build’barriers that are mirrored through the iPad’s camera, then appearing on screen.</div>

Restaurant in China is Staffed By Robots

<h1 style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Open Sans', arial; font-size: 22px; margin: 0px 0px 1em;">
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
One of my favorite things to do is to go out and eat at a restaurant. And while I like the occasional fast food experience, I really prefer a sit-down kind of meal. It really doesn’t matter where I go, though, the experience is just about the same. I check in with the hostess, get seated, wait for the waiter (there’s an oxymoron), order a drink, order food, get my food, eat my food, pay the bill, and leave the restaurant. Whether I’m eating at an Olive Garden or some kind of upscale, ritzy place, it’s all about the same. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing – it’s just the way it is. But it’s not the way it has to be.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
There’s a restaurant in China – in Kunshan, in the province of Jiangsu, to be exact – that does all of the above,<a href="http://news.yahoo.com/robo-cook-android-restaurant-boots-china-062418815.html" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank">except they do it with robots</a>. That’s right – you’re greeted by robots, seated by robots, given your food and drinks by robots – the whole deal. They even understand 40 some sentences. And it sounds awesome. It sounds like a trip to China needs to be in my future.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
<img alt="Restaurant In China Is Staffed By Robots" class="lazy alignnone size-full wp-image-18059 data-lazy-ready" data-lazy-src="http://news.filehippo.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Part-HKG-Hkg10088595-1-1-0.jpg" data-lazy-type="image" height="460" src="http://news.filehippo.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Part-HKG-Hkg10088595-1-1-0.jpg" style="background: rgb(236, 240, 244); display: inline; float: none; max-width: 708px; padding: 10px;" width="708" /></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Heck, robots even cook the food in the restaurant’s kitchen.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
After a 2-hour charge, each of the robots can work a 5-hour shift. While they can only move on certain tracks in the floor, if a customer gets in their way, they will nicely ask them to step aside so they can pass.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
It seems many businesses are turning to robots because they don’t have to be paid a salary, and they don’t come with the problems of human workers, such as needing time off, calling in sick, etc. Each of the robots costs somewhere in the realm of $6,500.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">

Microsoft To Release Low End Phone Priced £15

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
There are still people out there that have no interest in technology but still need a handset or those who want a mobile device but can’t afford one.  <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Microsoft">Microsof</a>t has announced the release of a dual-sim mobile phone.  The best part?  It will only cost you £15.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
For such a basic phone, it will be available in three different colours: red, silver and black.  It is a surprise introduction to the Nokia range.  Although it won’t be able to access wireless internet, users can use USB connection, an SD card or Bluetooth to download videos and music onto the Nokia 130.  £15 and you can still watch videos.  Amazing!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCrQomnnpuUkw4TrNQqSMe-Ol6SfvoWnqjPIW5M7yia6bK0qjtVumJ58Ss_nfe9TqJM5iCR86hjOxEiPsEdIsY2zT7bFo0ov3sYC3nu698X9fprRILIk3vU1gDnPCrHeB7sKfP0HsIPhc/s1600/nokiachoto.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCrQomnnpuUkw4TrNQqSMe-Ol6SfvoWnqjPIW5M7yia6bK0qjtVumJ58Ss_nfe9TqJM5iCR86hjOxEiPsEdIsY2zT7bFo0ov3sYC3nu698X9fprRILIk3vU1gDnPCrHeB7sKfP0HsIPhc/s1600/nokiachoto.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
But that is not all, oh no, that is not all!  The mobile device includes a rear-mounted torch light, a 1.8 inch colour display screen as well as a FM radio.  Better yet, the Nokia 130 has a super long battery life and can last up to 36 days on standby and has 13 hours talk time.  For many areas in the world where electricity is not readily available, long-life battery is the key to the successful sale of this product.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Jo Harlow, the head of Microsoft’s mobile phone department said:  “this is a massive market segment, and there are not a lot of players in this segment for the reason that scale is really important. We have the distribution and supply chain scale to compete effectively in this market.  This is a space where smartphones today don’t reach, so there is still very strong benefits to our business.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Although it is such a low cost phone, Microsoft expects to gain profit from the sale of this phone.  The plan is to market the device in countries like China, India, Vietnam and Pakistan.  However, if you are expecting it in the UK, you will be disappointed.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
If you are looking for a cheap handset, you can purchase one for £26 from a firm called <a href="http://www.karbonnmobiles.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="karbonn">Karbonn</a> who launched a touchscreen smartphone last month.  But you’ll have to order it online as it has only been released in India.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
You can see the rest of the specs at the <a href="http://www.nokia.com/global/products/phone/130-dual-sim/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Nokia 130">Nokia </a>website.</div>

New 3D Tool Fills In Missing Parts Of Images

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
A lot of exciting projects are coming out of Carnegie Mellon University lately.  Dr. Yaser Sheikh, a computer scientist and his team, has recently created a digital editing tool that helps users manipulate objects in a photograph so that they can expose areas not in the original image.  For instance, users can turn a chair around to see the backside of it.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
How does the software do this?  3D models of objects in our everyday surroundings are used by the software to “imagine what is not visible,”said Sheikh.  The software uses numerical data from the models and the software ‘guesses’what the object might look like if it were moved in the picture.  Quite intelligent stuff, really.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjINjqhwBDsgAOtb95EsxGVpL8h6Dhf-hrJwIPngsVmpMSGw2Ph8XtmEzLHCXQX9fbFy13C6KwSwcUV4yTqwWYneXFym0YEUMho2PP1wAu5FgZLI6IJwWBr7nR9ZyJs6zQ1RrQ5pF4B3_4/s1600/3dtoolsfill.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjINjqhwBDsgAOtb95EsxGVpL8h6Dhf-hrJwIPngsVmpMSGw2Ph8XtmEzLHCXQX9fbFy13C6KwSwcUV4yTqwWYneXFym0YEUMho2PP1wAu5FgZLI6IJwWBr7nR9ZyJs6zQ1RrQ5pF4B3_4/s1600/3dtoolsfill.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Another aspect of the software is that it uses pixels in the image to guess the colour, lighting and texture of the object after it has been moved around.  Sheikh states, “It infers the 3-D lighting of the whole scene to create somewhat realistic shadows.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Perhaps you have photos that you are not quite happy with?  Perhaps you’d like to manipulate some photos to make them more exciting?  Now you can with this new software.  The best thing about it is that it is currently available for free, online, from the Carnegie Mellon computer science <a href="http://www.cs.cmu.edu/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="cs.cmu">website</a>.  You can even download the <a href="http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~om3d/papers/SIGGRAPH2014.pdf" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Original Paper">original paper</a> published by the team so you can learn the ins and outs of 3D object manipulation.Natasha Kholgade, Sheikh’s doctoral student, led the project and will decide whether the technology will be sold at a profit.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Shiekh and his colleagues are appearing at the <a href="http://www.siggraph.org/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="siggraph">International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques</a> in Vancouver, British Columbia taking place this week, to show their findings.</div>

What Apple Is Doing About Lack of Diversity in the Workplace

"I'm not satisfied with the numbers on this page," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. "They’re not new to us, and we’ve been working hard for quite some time to improve them. We are making progress, and we’re committed to being as innovative in advancing diversity as we are in developing our products."</div>

Apple became the latest technology company to voluntarily disclose the diversity of their workforce -- showing the racial disparity in Silicon Valley.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
A breakdown shows 54 percent of the company's technology jobs in the United States are held by whites, while Asians hold 23 percent of the jobs. White people make up 64 percent of Apple's leadership positions in the U.S., followed by Asians at 21 percent.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
Cook said the iPad and iPhone maker recently pledged $100 million to President Obama's ConnectED project, which aims to bring digital learning and cutting edge technology to economically challenged schools. Cook said 80 percent of the student population that will benefit from the high tech investment are from groups that are under-represented in Silicon Valley.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">

Men make up 80 percent of Apple's technology workforce worldwide, however the company did not release the demographic composition of all 98,000 employees.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
"Who we are, where we come from, and what we've experienced influence the way we perceive issues and solve problems," Cook said. "We believe in celebrating that diversity and investing in it."</div>

For a company that burst onto the personal computing market in the Steve Jobs era with the slogan "think different," Apple employees are now hearing another call to action from Cook: "Inclusion inspires innovation."</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
"All around the world, our team at Apple is united in the belief that being different makes us better," he wrote. Once complete, the cable will operate at 60 terabits per second, which is about ten million times faster than the typical cable modem, Urs Hölzle, Google's senior vice president of technical infrastructure, said today in a Google+ post.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
"At Google we want our products to be fast and reliable, and that requires a great network infrastructure, whether it's for the more than a billion Android users or developers building products on Google Cloud Platform," Hölzle said. "And sometimes the fastest path requires going through an ocean."</div>

Construction on Faster will begin immediately, according to a news release from NEC, the IT and network technology company that was awarded the contract to lay the cable. The project is scheduled to make its debut sometime during the second quarter of 2016.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
It's not the first time Google has gone underwater to improve Internet speed. In 2008, the company invested in cable that connected Southeast Asia and Japan.</div>
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 22px; padding: 0px;">
The company also backed UNITY, another Trans-Pacific cable system between the <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/topics/news/u.s.htm" id="ramplink_United States_" style="-webkit-transition: 0.2s; color: #2e538f; font-weight: bold; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; transition: 0.2s;" target="_blank">United States</a>and Japan that debuted in 2010. The cable has a capacity of 7.68 terabits per second, according to <a href="http://submarinenetworks.com/systems/trans-pacific/unity" style="-webkit-transition: 0.2s; color: #2e538f; font-weight: bold; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; transition: 0.2s;" target="external">Submarine Cable Networks</a>, meaning that the newly backed cable system will blow it out of the water.</div>

IOS 7.1.2 Jailbroken

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
A group of security researchers at the <a href="https://www.gtisc.gatech.edu/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="gtisc">Georgia Tech Information Security Center</a> (GTISC) have recently revealed a way to jailbreak the current generation of <a href="https://www.apple.com/ios/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="iOS">Apple iOS</a> devices such as iPhone and <a href="https://www.apple.com/ipad/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="iPad">iPad</a>, running the latest iOS software.</div>

Analyzing previously patched vulnerabilities with incomplete fixes discovered the jailbreak.  This new jailbreak will enable circumvention of Apple’s closed platform and enable people to dig around in the system and tweak it to their liking.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
To patch all vulnerabilities for a current, complex software system such as iOS is frequently difficult because of the volume of bugs and the response-time requirements involved. This latest jailbreak shows that rapid workarounds leave these devices vulnerable to exploitation.</div>

Toshiba have launched some serious storage media prior to today, and they have definitely made their mark on the world of tech.  They cater for home based solutions as well as enterprise initiatives.  If they keep snapping up firms like <a href="http://ocz.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="OCZ">OCZ</a> and creating better and <a href="http://news.filehippo.com/2014/03/ocz-create-lightning-fast-3-2-tb-ssd/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="OCZ fast SSD">better SSD’s</a> and HDD’s then I can’t see them going far wrong.</div>

The latest offering from <a href="http://www.toshiba.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Toshiba">Toshiba</a> is no exception to quality. The <a href="http://storage.toshiba.com/docs/default-source/press-releases/md04aba-v_series_release.pdf?sfvrsn=0" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="md04aba-v series">MD04ABA-V Series</a> has just launched, included is the company’s very first 5TB 3.5”, low RPM HDD.  The drive was specially developed for those guys who want something reliable for the world of surveillance applications.</div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
In fact, the Toshiba MD04ABA-V series was created to be used in applications like surveillance digital video recorders (SDVR) / hybrid SDVR and surveillance network video recorders (SNVR).</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
How capable is the Toshiba MD04ABA-V series? For a start, the hardware is able to handle surveillance applications, which offer support for up to 32 high definition cameras.  I don’t know about you but I think that’s reliable and flexible.  The Toshiba MD04ABA-V series supports 24/7 operation and will additionally incorporate rotational vibration (RV) sensors.  This is so it will be a suitable solution for use in RAID/multi-HDD based surveillance platforms.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The HDD comes with a massive 5TB of storage space.  This is great for customers who are wanting to beable to retain higher resolution surveillance video data for longer periods.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
This will have a lower impact on the environment with time, as a lesser number of hard drives will be required and therefore will leave a smaller storage footprint and lower energy costs.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">

Pope Francis: Young People, Don’t Waste Time On The Internet

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Pope Francis might just be the most popular and well-liked Pope in a long time (maybe ever?), but some recent comments regarding young people and the use of their time may not be received very well by them, especially in today’s technological world. While speaking to a group of around 50,000 German altar servers on Tuesday of this week, the Pope may have stepped on a lot of people’s toes. I guess that’s okay, though, since he’s the Pope – it kind of goes with his job description.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
While speaking to the large group of young people, Pope Francis <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/tech/social-media/pope-francis-urges-young-people-not-waste-time-internet-n173446" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank">encouraged them to be productive with their lives</a>and not to just sit idly by wasting their time. He said, “Maybe many young people waste too many hours on futile things…” He continued, “Our life is made up of time, and time is a gift from God, so it is important that it be used in good and fruitful actions.”</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNppv-e0Zq24u6SCj4CjRGPm23t3J159IIG8LQQ2RjMHF9cJMMXoGi-3hr_GtIpyokBuk9cIm9HCvmXSXPPYQW-z9qJOHVkFwDka6oLpaJRLt7SAFBDf480-_Ik8aLgBYqbgqCz4MRr3w/s1600/timewaste+facebook.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNppv-e0Zq24u6SCj4CjRGPm23t3J159IIG8LQQ2RjMHF9cJMMXoGi-3hr_GtIpyokBuk9cIm9HCvmXSXPPYQW-z9qJOHVkFwDka6oLpaJRLt7SAFBDf480-_Ik8aLgBYqbgqCz4MRr3w/s1600/timewaste+facebook.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Just what does he believe to be futile? Well, for starters - “…chatting on the Internet or with smartphones, watching TV soap operas, and (using) the products of technological progress, which should simplify and improve the quality of life, but distract attention away from what is really important.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
While I love technology, Pope Francis might just be onto something here. I rarely see a young person (or any person, really) anywhere who isn’t glued to his or her smartphone. What will their generation look like in the coming decades? It will be interesting to see if any of the younger generation puts his words into practice.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
What do you think? Do you agree with Pope Francis? Do you think we as a society are becoming too dependent on our smartphones and the internet? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!</div>

Is Twitter Moving Into E-Commerce?

<span style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">There has been an interesting turn of events this week in the social media sphere.  Twitter may possibly be planning a move into the e-commerce field.  A number of different users noticed a new, and apparently inactive, setting for “payment and shipping” inside the Twitter Android app.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4wS-3LKDbH5XoLRXHJb0Bjvkjvl7-BKbVyrV3f62i-aoVyIPQ1PoCdOQvvSt4DCrNc39Lg7FX1QKiL1DiMzq9kuAL5JFAK_cc4mYdu9JXhfAtCa6B6OGR3r_GdbFbL6ALMR0RdJCr6lc/s1600/twitter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4wS-3LKDbH5XoLRXHJb0Bjvkjvl7-BKbVyrV3f62i-aoVyIPQ1PoCdOQvvSt4DCrNc39Lg7FX1QKiL1DiMzq9kuAL5JFAK_cc4mYdu9JXhfAtCa6B6OGR3r_GdbFbL6ALMR0RdJCr6lc/s1600/twitter.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
This setting was first highlighted by user <a href="http://twitter.com/am_Bix" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="am_Bix">@am_Bix</a>, who came across the currently unusable option, concealed within the settings menu.  And @am_Bix is not alone in his findings, as at least four other Twitter users have taken screenshots of the same menu bar.  This news is the latest ‘evidence’ that hints Twitter is gearing up for a move into commerce. It was reported in June of this year by Re/Code that a “<a href="http://recode.net/2014/06/30/buy-now-buttons-start-appearing-in-tweets-is-twitter-shopping-finally-here/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Twitter Shopping">buy now</a>” button began appearing in tweets, linking to retail website, Fancy. Re/Code also came across documents, which appeared to show commerce plans for Twitter.  It has also been rumoured that Twitter has been working on a deal with payments provider <a href="https://stripe.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Stripe">Stripe</a>.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Obviously at this point in time it is all just speculation, and is very unclear as to what Twitter has planned.  The ‘payment and shipping’ option in the Android app does seem to tie in with other clues that have surfaced.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
This e-commerce menu is perhaps the most intriguing piece of ‘evidence’ that has come to light though.  If this were the start of an e-commerce initiative by the social networking giant, it would give brand names a fresh reason to engage with Twitter.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">

The drone delivery service, called Prime Air, could greatly speed up Amazon’s delivery times, creating a competitive advantage for it over other digital marketplaces and lowering the time-threshold advantage that traditional stores still enjoy over their online competition.<br /><br />Amazon’s plans are not small.<br /><br />“One day, seeing Amazon Prime Air will be as normal as seeing mail trucks on the road today, resulting in enormous benefits for consumers across the nation,” the company adds. It asks for the exemption so that it can be ready to launch its drones when the legal framework is in place for it to do so.<br /><br />The drones, it claims, are on their eight and ninth generation, and can fly up to 50 miles per hour.<br /><br />The FAA is currently testing drones at a number of locations in the United States, but has come under criticism that its work has been too slow thus far to meet set targets. If true, the FAA could in fact retard the growth of the drone industry, something that Amazon obviously thinks will be large.<br /><br /><br />Why is there foot-dragging about drones? There are rules in place that allow hobbyists to have fun, of course, but commercial use has been frowned on by the government for some time. You can understand their concerns: The FAA is tasked with keeping the skies safe. What happens when a drone accidentally flies into a commercial air pattern and takes out the cockpit window and a few hundred people. That’s a dire hypothetical, but you get the drift.<br /><br />I’d love to lay wagers on what major technology company is the second into drone technology on Amazon’s scale. Microsoft probably has something in the lab. Google is more focused on cars, and Apple? Well, I don’t see that happening.<br /><br />Also, when will the first drone-first e-commerce company launch to take on Amazon. And finally, how much venture capital money will be expended in whatever becomes the drone sector rat-race to become Big Drone.<br /><br />Let’s hope it’s not the next clean tech.</span>

Introduction</h2>
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">The </span>Lumia 930<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"> is the international version of Verizon's exclusive Lumia Icon flagship, and is arguably the swan song of the Nokia that were, as it has been conceived before Microsoft gobbled up its entire smartphone business. Nevertheless, it is Windows Phone's attempt to hold the flagship fort against Android juggernauts like the</span>Galaxy S5<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"> or the </span>Xperia Z2<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">. At first brush it has everything needed to take them head-on, like a large 1080p display, quad-core Snapdragon processor, 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal memory, a 20 MP main camera, and exclusive Dolby surround audio recording. Design</h2>
<h5 style="background-color: white; border-left-color: rgb(33, 140, 195); border-left-style: solid; border-left-width: 2px; color: #757575; display: table; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; line-height: 21px; margin: 21px 0px 0px; padding: 0px 10px;">
With its chunky, but comfortable to grasp chassis, the Lumia 930 is one solid piece of unibody craftsmanship.</h5>
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Compared to the </span>Lumia 1020<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"> and its giant 41 MP camera hump on the back, Nokia Lumia 930 is definitely smaller. However, at 5.39 x 2.80 x 0.39 inches (137 x 71 x 9.8 mm) and weighing 5.89 oz (167 g), it is still bulky and heavy for a 5-incher. The heavy unibody chassis feel very solid, though, and this feeling is further reinforced by the aluminum rim surrounding the sides, which gives the colorful polycarbonate pillow-shaped shells of the Lumia 930 a more premium look. We also liked how the tapered cover glass slopes towards the sides to merge with the metal rim for one uninterrupted look and feel. Nokia bragged that it takes hundreds of robotic movements to achieve the curved glass edges, and we have to say that the results of all that scrubbing are very pleasant to hold or simply look at.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">The buttons are all located comfortably on the right hand side, with the most used power/lock key right smack in the middle. The lock key, as well as the volume rocker above it, and the two-stage camera shutter button are very ergonomic, easy to feel and press without looking, and with a deep tactile feedback. </span><br />
<h2 style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: 'Open Sans Condensed'; font-size: 24px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 24px; margin: 12px 0px 0px; padding: 0px;">
Display</h2>
<h5 style="background-color: white; border-left-color: rgb(33, 140, 195); border-left-style: solid; border-left-width: 2px; color: #757575; display: table; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-style: italic; font-weight: normal; line-height: 21px; margin: 21px 0px 0px; padding: 0px 10px;">
True to its traditions, Nokia supplied a display with excellent outdoor visibility, and then threw in manual color mode adjustments for a good measure.</h5>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Lumia 930 sports a 5” 1080x1920 pixels AMOLED display with the respectable 441ppi pixel density. You have several display modes to choose from, like cool, vivid and advanced, with the latter letting you play around with color temperature and saturation sliders, until you've reached the desired results. Color saturation can be adjusted from “natural”, all the way to the gaudy “vivid” level. Color temperature goes from warm through neutral to cold, while you can also emphasize separate colors with another slider – from green to purple. In the default mode, we measured the color temperature to be 6724K, which is very close to the reference 6500K white point, but still, white has a slight purpleish tint. As usual with AMOLED display, colors are oversaturated colors but to a lesser extent than, say, in the Galaxy S5's default mode.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Nokia's ClearBlack layer on top of the display comes to improve the screen reflectivity and we can attest that the Lumia 930 performs great in terms of outdoor visibility. We took it out together with the Galaxy S5, which is great in this aspect, and Nokia's phone performed on par, even beating the S5 by a tad when looked at from an angle.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Covered by sculpted Gorilla Glass 3, the Nokia Lumia 930 screen should withstand more than a few bumps and scratches, and, as usual, it also features a supersensitive touch layer, meaning that you can operate it with your gloves on.</span></div>

Meet Intel’s New 730 Series SSD

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The <a href="http://www.intel.com/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Intel">Intel</a> Corporation knows both the technical and commercial value of SSD’s and has a selection to choose from.  One of the frontrunners is the <a href="http://www.intel.co.uk/content/www/uk/en/solid-state-drives/solid-state-drives-730-series.html" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="730 Series SSD">Intel 730 Series</a>.  This was introduced to market a couple of months ago in February 2014.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The drive was aimed squarely at professionals and enthusiasts, as it is a high-performance consumer SSD. This SSD was in contrast to recent drives that have taken to employing SandForce controllers with Intel’s firmware.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
So this time, Intel went back to using its own controller and firmware and the drive specifies its own NAND flash, here 20nm MLC. Intel says that up to 70 GB of writes per day for the 480 GB capacity models can be accomplished, this suggests a total writespan of 127 TB.   The firm is confident of the product’s endurance that they have offered a 5-year warranty.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAkQVF8Wq-8NrRnH975miexcFy__2CpaK0FpoObNfmrMcNLHKJKxGkupZ68IhwlsTEVj3F8q_mWkPD_AwDjUMKYTVMzGx8QIu4i1mJkl4GIVQa-h7UUNRdiAAsp5T1SlcU-fytxfjSoJY/s1600/intel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAkQVF8Wq-8NrRnH975miexcFy__2CpaK0FpoObNfmrMcNLHKJKxGkupZ68IhwlsTEVj3F8q_mWkPD_AwDjUMKYTVMzGx8QIu4i1mJkl4GIVQa-h7UUNRdiAAsp5T1SlcU-fytxfjSoJY/s1600/intel.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Intel doesn’t specify any RAM cache details, it is understood though that the larger of the two available models at 480 GB uses 512 MB of DDR3 DRAM memory.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Intel’s figures of the internal power consumption are 5.5 W when active and 1.5 W while idle.  Because of this power consumption, it is suggested this SSD would not be a great choice for laptops wanting a decent battery life.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The performance of this drive in uncomplicated sequential runs, will comfortably reach the SATA Revision 3.0 limit, achieving 559 MB/s for reads and 507 MB/s for writes.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
So, with a good warranty, datacentre-class integrity and top-tier performance this SSD form Intel is hitting all the right notes. The drive gives an enormous data-write ceiling which is needless to say, very impressive.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
The 730 Series is an expensive drive at £363 but if you want speed at the SATA limit and a formal guarantee from the manufacturer of long endurance, this Intel SSD will give you both.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
As always, if you would like to leave a sensible comment, then please do so in the comments section below.</div>

How To Create/Play Blu-ray ISO Image Files On A Media PC

<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
I love movies like most people, but I tend to keep my collection on backup files rather than using DVD or Blu-Ray.  It is quite easy to back up your DVD and Blu-ray collection to ISO image files.  An ISO is a file, which is an exact image of a disk, whether that is a DVD, Blu Ray or HD-DVD.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
If you have a media PC it is a great way to store your movie collection.  You can watch Blu-ray movies on HDTV without quality loss and you can also burn a Blu-ray disc easily as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpApj5QbEg3Gu6NYvjmtRXU_NzN6c-WO0rIRxbzh7sSjlC4k5eZAT9HVaPF6e4UKZxp-ZMyzO4tuq2ZUvvG__WdvHUXoPkKV6hUENW_yAih3yIbmUw77nHLOSCHut9Wh8uH78E8drzvHA/s1600/brrrrrrrrrr.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpApj5QbEg3Gu6NYvjmtRXU_NzN6c-WO0rIRxbzh7sSjlC4k5eZAT9HVaPF6e4UKZxp-ZMyzO4tuq2ZUvvG__WdvHUXoPkKV6hUENW_yAih3yIbmUw77nHLOSCHut9Wh8uH78E8drzvHA/s1600/brrrrrrrrrr.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
It isn’t very difficult to create and play Blu-ray ISO image files on a Media PC.  If you don’t know what to do this is a quick guide to help you out.  First of all you will need a powerful enough Media PC that is hooked up to a HDTV and a Virtual Drive setup and media player software such as PowerDVD.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Step 1: Add Blu-ray ISO image.<br />Download and install Daemon Tools Lite.  Once installed run the application and Click the <em>plus</em> icon to add the Blu-ray ISO file into virtual drive: Select the ISO file you want and then click “Open”.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Step 2: Mount Blu-ray ISO image to a virtual drive.<br />Right click on the file name and select ‘Mount’ then ‘Device’.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Step 3: Find Blu-ray ISO image file in the virtual drive.<br />After the Blu-ray ISO image file is mounted into virtual drive now click close. The ISO image file will show in your BD-Rom Drive.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #5f6d80; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 23.310400009155273px;">
Step 4. Play the Blu-ray ISO image file from the virtual drive.<br />All you need to do now is use a media player like PowerDVD to play the file.  PowerDVD is a quality application for Blu-ray playback on a Media PC. <span style="color: #666666; font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">The young electronics company <a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> is exploding in China and seems posed to take over the world. In the four short years since its founding, Xiaomi has become the electronics brand to watch in the most populous nation on earth.<br /><br />Xiaomi is the now the real deal — thanks in part to its unabashed appropriation of design cues from companies like Apple. But if <a href="http://techcrunch.com/tag/Xiaomi">Xiaomi </a>wants to maintain its growth and expand outside of China, it must be prepared to accept the consequences for its tendency to blatantly rip competitors off.<br /><br />The Chinese market operates under a different set of standards than the U.S. Here, originality is of utmost importance and intellectual property is highly regarded and protected. Though China has IP laws, they are generally considered weaker and are infrequently enforced.<br /><br />Historically, however, the act of copying is sometimes worth the risk. Apple notably copied <a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/xerox">Xerox’s</a>graphical user interface, and likewise, Microsoft copied Apple’s OS implementation for Windows. Both companies had great success — and both took flak for doing so. More recently Samsung stole several notable features from Apple, locking both companies up in endless court battles.<br /><br />But Xiaomi is a different animal. Where Apple and Microsoft largely cribbed a concept, Xiaomi replicates designs and design elements. The products aren’t clones, per se, in that they aren’t identical down to the individual components or even functions, but the company undeniably looks to other products for design ideas. The company produces some original products, but the design of many of its offerings are more mashups than homages.<br /><br />This shouldn’t be taken as the ignorant act of an immature company: Xiaomi knows exactly what it’s doing.<br /><br />There have been many ‘inspirations’ for Xiaomi’s designs, but the company’s focus on Apple is staggering. Last week, CEO <a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/person/lei-jun">Lei Jun</a>, wearing a black shirt and blue jeans, did his best to emulate Steve Jobs while unveiling the new Mi 4. He repetitively talked about Apple’s products. He <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealtime/2014/07/22/less-cheap-more-like-an-iphone-the-new-xiaomi-phone-is-unveiled/">even specifically stated</a> that his company went to the same manufacturers that produce the iPhone to see what they could make for Xiaomi. And the presentation ended with a slide that stated “One more thing…”, an Apple hallmark.<br /><br /><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/one-more-thing.jpg?w=680&h=374" /><br /><br />It was the only slide in the 95-minute show that was in English.<br />Don’t Think Different<br /><br />Apple’s influence on Xiaomi is widely known. <a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/businessweek">Businessweek</a> called the Mi 4 an “<a href="http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-07-22/the-latest-slick-cheap-smartphone-from-xiaomi-chinas-rising-mobile-power">iPhone-esque smartphone</a>.” Last year The New York Times called Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun a Steve Jobs “<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/05/business/global/in-china-an-empire-built-by-aping-apple.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0">knockoff</a>.” Brian Blair, analyst at Rosenblatt Securities, <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/101795487#.">explained to CNBC</a> last year that Xiaomi is not anxious to expand outside of China because the company is still in copycat mode.<br /><br />“Samsung was in the copycat mode for a long time,” he added.<br /><br />Xiaomi is widely known to take heavy inspiration from other companies’ products and marketing materials, but it most often copies Apple’s. The Mi 4 is Xiaomi’s best iPhone copy yet. It clearly takes inspiration from the iPhone 4s and iPhone 5. And for good reason: The iPhone is widely popular in China but carries a premium price tag.<br /><br /><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/mi4-vs-iphone.jpg?w=680" /><br /><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"> </a><br /><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"> </a><br /><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/mi4-vs-iphone.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/mi-box-vs-apple-tv.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/xiaomi-mipad-vs-iphone-5c.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/xiaomi-mi-router-mini-1-vs-magic-trackpad.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/powerbank-vs-ipod-mini-bottom.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/xiaomi-mi-pad-vs-ipad-mini-retina.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/mi3-apple-aperture.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><br /><br />Then there’s the company’s streaming box, the Mi Box, which bears a striking resemblance to the Apple TV as shown above. And in the case of the MiPad tablet, the company clearly looked at the iPad mini and iPhone 5c for their design choices — even in the MiPad’s marketing photos. The<a href="http://www.mi.com/miwifimini">Xiaomi Mi Router Mini</a> looks just like the Apple Magic Trackpad. The Mi Power Bank is a blatant iPod mini rip-off. Worse yet, <a href="http://daringfireball.net/linked/2014/07/23/mi-aperture">the camera lens shown</a> on the Mi 3 product page was the Apple Aperture icon — seriously: The lens shown on the phone was, without question, the icon of an Apple product until Xiaomi finally changed it on July 29.<br /><br />Xiaomi’s focus on Apple is smart. The iPhone is expensive in Xiaomi’s primary market of China, where Xiaomi products are available for significantly less (the Mi 3 sells for about half of Apple’s budget iPhone 5c.) By constantly comparing and contrasting itself with Apple, Xiaomi is capitalizing on an established brand. So far it’s working: Xiaomi is seeing explosive growth in China, ending 2013 with a 271% year over year growth. Bloomberg reports that Xiaomi intends to sell 100 million handsets next year.<br /><br />But Xiaomi doesn’t just copy Apple.<br /><br />Xiaomi’s website was filled with what appear to be pilfered images. Many of the images shown on the Mi 3 camera roll on the website and on stage <a href="http://youtu.be/O89M3CYd8RU?t=5m44s">during Xiaomi’s announcement of the device</a> were lifted and cropped. In some cases watermarks were removed. Here’s one stolen from <a href="http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/photo-of-the-day/sunflower-oregon/">National Geographic</a>. And another from <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/51074875@N06/7005166745/in/gallery-claudio_ar-72157629830598295/">Flickr</a>. Two are ripped from Getty Image users (<a href="http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/photo/red-rose-close-up-high-res-stock-photography/200457431-001">1</a>) (<a href="http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/photo/cute-small-cat-royalty-free-image/129801440">2</a>). Xiaomi changed the images on July 29 after others noticed the infringement.<br /><br /> <br /><br /><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/1.jpg?w=680" /><br /><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"> </a><br /><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"> </a><br /><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/1.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/2.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/3.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/4.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/5.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/6.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/7.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/8.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/9.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/10.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/11.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/12.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/30/xiaomis-one-more-thing/#"><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/mi4-macaw.jpg?w=80&h=60&crop=1" /></a><br /><br />This tactic continued on the Mi 4’s product page where at least one image purportedly shot by the phone’s camera has been available online since <a href="http://impreso.elnuevodiario.com.ni/2006/05/17/economia/19662">at least 2006</a> and is also available for purchase through a stock image site.<br /><br />Never mind that Xiaomi was passing off professional images as shots captured by the Mi 3’s camera. Again, here, Xiaomi apparently shows complete disregard for the intellectual property of others.<br /><br />Xiaomi is even cribbing products from startups, and recently <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/04/02/xiaomi-pressy-clone/">announced a virtual clone</a> of the popular Kickstarter project <a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/pressy">Pressy</a>. It’s essentially a little button that resides in a phone’s 3.5mm headphone slot. This little device raised $695K on Kickstarter in 2013 and is still available for pre-order for $27. The Xiaomi version costs $1-2 and does the same thing.<br /><br /><br /> <br /><br /><img src="http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/pressy.jpg?w=680&h=322" /><br /><br /> <br />The Spin Zone<br /><br />Even with the overwhelming evidence of copying, Xiaomi’s leadership is adamantly denying copying Apple’s design and has launched an all-out PR defensive. CEO Lei Jun apparently <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2013/09/12/technology/xiaomi-phones-china/">does not like</a> the title “<a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/person/steve-jobs">Steve Jobs</a> of China.” Former Google VP and current Xiaomi Vice President <a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/person/hugo-barra">Hugo Barra</a> is aggressively trying to change the narrative surrounding the company, recently giving <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/7/22/5925753/hugo-barra-xiaomi-china-interview">several interviews</a> in which he stated that he is “sick and tired of people making sweeping sensationalist statements.”<br /><br />Barra explained to <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/7/22/5925753/hugo-barra-xiaomi-china-interview">The Verge</a> and <a href="http://thenextweb.com/asia/2014/07/24/xiaomis-hugo-barra-defends-sensational-copycat-claims-says-apple-is-an-inspiration/">The Next Web</a> that he sees Xiaomi as “an incredibly innovative company.”<br /><br />It is hard to disagree. Xiaomi is innovating in Android customization for China, in sales methodology and especially in the quality of materials and specifications in its devices given their cost-to-price ratio.<br /><br />But the fact remains that at even at high organizational levels, the company culture appears to be to ‘copy, not extend’. Whereas Samsung has now learned to lead the CE conversation, much as Sony did in the early 2000s, Xiaomi parrots.<br /><br />Both Apple and Xiaomi found gaping holes in their home markets left from Samsung and Apple and then filled them with products designed to meet those needs.<br /><br />Like Apple before it in the States, Xiaomi evolved the user interface for its core Chinese demographic. The smartphones ship with a heavily modified version of Android that allows sports a unique feature set and especially important for the Chinese market, allows for nearly endless customization. Forgoing Google services, Xiaomi launched its own application marketplace, which as of last year, <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/09/02/xiaomi-app-downloads-apple-google/">had seen impressive download rates</a>. MIUI is the best version of Android I’ve used and <a href="http://en.miui.com/download.html">is available</a> for many competitor’s handsets.<br /><br />Many of Xiaomi’s innovations are centered around retail sales rather than the product designs themselves.<br /><br />Xiaomi manages to sell its hardware below the market average by spending hardly anything on advertising and largely avoiding selling its products in stores, opting for direct consumer sales instead. According to <a href="http://www.crunchbase.com/person/lin-bin">Bin Lin</a>, Xiaomi President, <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/mobile-phones/10880495/How-can-Xiaomi-sell-its-phones-so-cheaply.html">the company sells its products</a> for nearly the cost of the bill of materials and does not factor in other line items like R&D and shipping. Unlike other top cell phone manufacturers, Xiaomi does not build up a large inventory of products prior to their launch.<br /><br />So far, Xiaomi sells small batches of its products, sometimes around 5,000 units, allowing the company to hedge its costs while creating a consumer demand with a line-around-the-block mentality.<br /><br />It must be stated here that all of those decisions are fairly innovative for the Chinese market — and the world, where carrier subsidies and sales generally dominate. It’s working, too. <a href="http://thenextweb.com/asia/2014/07/29/report-xiaomi-pips-apple-to-rank-2nd-in-chinas-smartphone-sales-share-but-threatens-samsung-more/">Recent data states </a>that Xiaomi is now second to only Samsung in Chinese smartphone sales. The brand pushed Apple down to third place and is closing the gap on Samsung.<br /><br />Xiaomi is currently<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/04/23/xiaomi-10-markets/"> set to expand operations</a> to several new markets. The company launched in Singapore earlier in 2014 and is targeting 10 new markets by the end of the year, including Brazil, Mexico and Russia. VP Barra <a href="http://news.idg.no/cw/art.cfm?id=8B7FBB8F-B5A3-2122-515FC9F7B30D4C29">stated in April</a> that the company intends to utilize the same business model in the new markets.<br />One More Thing…<br /><br />The company is young and clearly learning as it goes. Xiaomi is in proven hands with Lei Jun as CEO and ex-Googlers Lin Bin as President and Barra leading its international expansion. Four days after<a href="http://daringfireball.net/linked/2014/07/25/xiaomi-flower">a public shaming</a>, the company removed all seemingly stolen images and photographs from its website. The Mi 3’s product page no longer shows an Apple logo for the phone’s lens.<br /><br />Xiaomi doesn’t yet have the clout of Apple or Samsung, and if the company is intent on continuing with its current strategy of stealing the work of others, it will need to stay within countries where that’s acceptable. In the U.S., however, it will learn one more thing: the electronics giants are litigious and have deep pockets. The real battle, then, could still be coming.<br /><br />Even if Xiaomi does not like the sweeping sensationalist statements comparing it to Apple, the company has earned the distinction. And for the most part, it’s a compliment. Apple, which has also blatantly copied other companies in the past, created a global empire that so far few have challenged. By many accounts, Xiaomi could, one day, challenge Apple — especially if it gets its feet underneath it with regards to original hardware design.</span>
